Volunteer FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here’s everything you need to know about Volunteering at Kitega Community Centre.

Fill out the application form completely and submit. Please give us 3-7 days to evaluate your application material.

If you send your application and you don’t hear from us within five working days, please consider sending an email to the above address to ensure that your application has been received.

NOTE: It is important that you only apply when you are sure that you will be able to travel to Uganda.

Can I fundraise for Kitega Centre before I come?

Yes you can fundraise for the Kitega Centre before you come. Many past volunteers have fundraised to raise funds for the centre and their volunteer contribution.

What Other Costs Am I Responsible For?

Volunteers pay for their own travel, insurance, and personal expenses while in Uganda. Past volunteers have found at most US $150 to be sufficient on a monthly basis to cover their personal expenses. These costs may be more or even less depending on your needs and interests.

If you are interested in visiting tourist sites while in Uganda, we can help you with such arrangements and recommend some good places.

Where Will I Stay?

Kitega Community Centre now has a volunteer house “SHALOM HOUSE” located at the Kitega Centre.

The house has almost all the basic facilities you need and there is an opportunity to interact with the wider community in the evening and during community Outreach activities.

The Shalom house has been hosting all Kitega Volunteers since October 2013.

What Should I Bring?

In addition to personal belongings and travel documents, we encourage you to bring any in-kind donations that you would like to donate to the centre. If you have projects of your own to implement in Kitega, please bring all necessary materials because we might not be able to provide the items that you need.

Wish list:

  • Clothes for children and adults,
  • Shoes
  • Toys
  • Stationary (i.e. pens, pencils, books)
  • Books for our Community Library
  • Games equipment; footballs, volleyballs, indoor games etc
  • Learning aids for children with for children with disabilities

Why the commitment fee?

This acts as confirmation by the volunteer that he/she will be available to take up the volunteer role applied for. It’s part of the entire volunteering costs and only paid by volunteers who have been accepted.

How Much Does it Cost to Volunteer?

Costs per volunteer will vary depending on your length of stay.

Suggested Volunteer Contribution:

  • 2 Weeks – $ 350 US
  • 3 weeks – $ 450 US
  • 1 month – $ 500 US

After the first month, costs vary depending on length of stay.

Many past volunteers usually do fundraising to raise the contributions and more support to the Kitega Centre

NOTE: These costs are NOT fixed costs. If you have concerns about the costs, please contact us. We will be more than happy to accommodate you in anyway that we can.

What do the volunteering costs cover?

These costs cover:

  • Airport pick up
  • Airport drop off
  • Shalom House Expenses –  this include accommodation all the meals in a day.

Administrative  support by the Kitega staff as you volunteer.

The volunteering costs however do not include:

  • Travel cost to Uganda.
  • Personal expenses in Uganda
  • Insurance

What is the Commitment Fee?

Once you have been accepted to volunteer at the Kitega Centre, you are required to pay a commitment fee of $20 (US), which is non refundable if you choose to cancel. The payments are made online through the Kitega Community Centre website donation pages.

On arrival to Uganda you will then pay the agreed fees less the commitment fee of $20. You will be given a receipt for your own records.

What will happen upon arrival?

You will arrive at Entebbe International Airport and the Kitega Team will pick you up from the airport. We will also drop you off at the airport at the end of your stay.

A program/timetable  for your stay will be designed by the program coordinator, and you will have the chance to contribute to this program to ensure that you make the best use of your time in Uganda. Depending on what you will be doing, your days will start at 8am and will end at 5pm. You will also have free time for personal explorations and to plan any projects that you would like to implement in the community. Kitega village is located just about 40 km outside Kampala, the capital; you will have easy access to the city.

Please note that your safety is very important to us. We will provide the support and guidance you need to carry out your work. You are also welcome to talk to our past volunteers. Please contact us, and we will put you in contact with them.

Why should I pay to volunteer?

kit41

We are very glad that you would like to volunteer and hope that the costs will not deter you from volunteering. However, Kitega Community Centre is a donor-funded organization, and we have limited resources.

The fee that you pay will be used to cover the following costs:

  • Housing and food costs: Subsidised food Costs while you stay at the Kitega Centre Shalom – House.
  • Administrative costs: Part of the volunteering fee will be used to cover administration costs e.g  transport the volunteer(s) to and from the airport.

The remainder of the fee will be used to support Kitega’s programs. Please note that there is no limit to what you can donate as the donations will benefit the community.
