Kitega in 2025: A New Chapter of Growth and Hope

2025 marks a fresh beginning for the Kitega Community Centre. As we enter our next 25 years, we reflect on a legacy of impact and look ahead to even more transformative work. From empowering young adults with disabilities to launching new community projects, Kitega continues to stand for inclusion, dignity, and hope.

From Children to Changemakers: Youth with Disabilities Step Forward

In 1999, Kitega began as a place of care for children with disabilities. Today, many of those children are young adults, ready to take on the world.

With the support of our team and partners, 15 young people are now involved in vocational training, employment, and income-generating projects. These programs are designed to help them live independently and contribute meaningfully to the wider community.

“I never thought I could earn my own income. Now I make briquates and help support my family. Kitega helped me believe in myself again.”- Ibra

Hosting Press Freedom Day:

Kitega was proud to host the Regional International Press Freedom Day this year. Journalists, activists, and leaders gathered at the Centre to celebrate the importance of a free press—and to advocate for people with disabilities.

It was a powerful moment to share our stories and showcase the role of media in supporting inclusion and justice.

Spreading the Kitega Model: VICOBAplus Expands

Kitega’s VICOBAplus initiative is reaching new communities! Two villages in Uganda have started their own empowerment programs using the Kitega model—building savings groups, launching businesses, and supporting vulnerable groups.

“… with VICOBAplus we now feel more in control of our lives.” —

Project Porridge: Meals Making a Difference

Thanks to support from the sponsors and VICOBAplus maize mill, our Project Porridge continues to provide meals to children in local schools. In one school, attendance increased from 100 to 400 children!

On average, project porridge is providing 1000 meals a day and enabling several pupils to learn.

A simple meal is keeping children healthy and motivated to stay in school.

Uplifting Young Mothers: The Tuwone Project

Through the Tuwone Project, young mothers—many of whom are survivors of abuse—are rebuilding their lives through VICOBAplus. They’re learning financial skills, forming support groups, and finding strength in one another.

What’s even more inspiring? They are already planning to support other young mothers facing similar struggles.

Building our Community Hospital

Access to healthcare is essential, and our community hospital project is steadily moving forward. We are now focused on equipping the facility so families in our region can access the care they deserve.

We are deeply grateful to the supporters and donors making this possible.

25 Years of Impact—and We’re Just Getting Started

Everything we see today—empowered youth, growing communities, stronger families—is the result of 25 years of love, service, and resilience.

As we step into the future, we invite you to continue walking with us. Your support makes this journey possible.

Volunteers at the Kitega Centre

At Kitega, we continue to be blessed by the ongoing support of international volunteers who travel from around the world to serve, share knowledge, and walk alongside our community.

From teaching and training, to helping with infrastructure, health projects, and business mentoring, these volunteers bring fresh energy and global connection to our mission.

This year, we are especially proud to celebrate Linda Hopper, who was named Volunteer of the Year by the University of Reading in recognition of her tireless service at Kitega. Linda’s work has touched countless lives, and her compassion continues to inspire both our local and international teams.
