At Kitega Community Centre, we believe that dignity is not only restored in how people are seen but also in what they can do.
Imara is our skills and livelihoods pillar.
It exists to support individuals, especially young people and adults, to develop practical skills, build confidence, and create pathways toward independent living.
The word Imara means “strong” or “firm,” and that is what we aim to build: people who are rooted, capable, and able to shape their own future.
Why Imara Exists
Many young people in our communities complete school or leave early without clear pathways into work.
Others, including persons with disabilities, are often excluded from opportunities altogether.
This can lead to:
- Dependence without choice
- Skills without application
- Potential without direction
Imara exists to bridge that gap by turning ability into opportunity.
Our Approach
We focus on practical, hands-on learning that connects directly to real life.
This means:
- Learning by doing
- Building skills that can generate income
- Growing confidence alongside competence
We do not separate skills from life.
We support people to use what they learn in ways that are meaningful to them and their families.
What We Offer
Vocational Training
We provide training in skills that are relevant, accessible, and adaptable within the local context.
These include:
- Tailoring and garment making
- Crafts and weaving
- Poultry farming
- Bakery and food production
- Soap making
Training is practical and progressive allowing individuals to grow at their own pace.
Inclusive Skills Development
Imara works closely with KAI to ensure that persons with disabilities are not left behind.
Training environments are:
- Supportive
- Adaptive
- Built around individual ability
This allows participants to:
- Learn in ways that suit them
- Build confidence
- Develop real, usable skills
Pathways to Livelihoods
Learning a skill is only part of the journey.
We support participants to:
- Begin small income-generating activities
- Work collectively or individually
- Explore opportunities within their communities
Some go on to:
- Start small businesses
- Support their families
- Train others

Imara is also growing as a space for creativity and problem-solving.

A Story of Growth
Robert, who is deaf, joined Kitega, unsure of his path.
Through Imara, he trained in tailoring. Over time, he developed not only his skills but also his confidence.
Today, he supports others in learning, helps produce school uniforms, and contributes to a growing enterprise.
His journey reflects what Imara stands for: Ability recognised, skills developed, dignity restored.
