Changing hearts. Restoring dignity. Building inclusive communities.
At Kitega Community Centre, we believe every person is created in the image of God—with dignity, purpose, and ability.
The Kitega Ability Initiative (KAI) exists to change how individuals are seen, valued, and supported especially those who have often been overlooked.
For over 25 years, this has been at the heart of our work.
Where It All Began
Kitega was founded in response to a reality we could not ignore. Children with disabilities were being hidden, rejected, and misunderstood.
Some were labelled, isolated, or denied the chance to learn and grow like other children. But over time, we realised that the deeper challenge was not only the situation of the children—it was how the community understood them.
KAI exists to gently shift that understanding—starting with the heart.
What We Believe
We believe that:
- Every person carries God-given worth and ability
- Disability does not take away a person’s value or potential
- No child should be excluded because of their condition or circumstance
We also believe that caring for the most vulnerable is not optional, it is part of who we are, and what it means to live out our faith.
Our Approach: Sensitising Hearts
KAI is not just about services, it is about changing how people see.
We work alongside families, schools, and communities to move from:
- Fear to understanding
- Stigma to acceptance
- Rejection to belonging
When this shift begins:
- Children are welcomed
- Families begin to see new possibilities
- Communities become more inclusive
This is where lasting change starts.
What We Do
Supporting Children with Disabilities
We create a safe and supportive environment where children can grow in confidence, connection, and expression.
Through:
- Daily care and wellbeing support
- Social and emotional development
- Structured learning activities
Children who were once hidden are now seen—and included.

Learning & Development
We support children in ways that meet them where they are.
This includes:
- Preparing children to transition into mainstream schools where possible
- Providing tailored support for those who need a different learning approach
Activities include:
- Literacy and numeracy
- Creative expression through art, music, and play
- Social and cooperative learning
Progress may look different for each child—but every step matters.

Supporting Vulnerable Children & Families
KAI also supports children and families facing vulnerability due to poverty, loss, or limited access to basic needs.
Many of the children we work with:
- Live in the same households as children with disabilities
- Face challenges such as hunger, disrupted education, or unstable care
Our aim is not to separate—but to support in a way that strengthens the whole community.
Project Porridge – Learning Without Hunger
We noticed that many children were coming to school hungry, making it difficult for them to concentrate or stay engaged.
Project Porridge works with schools to provide daily meals so that children can learn with focus and dignity.
This has contributed to:
- Improved attendance
- Better concentration in class
- Greater participation in learning

Kitega Education Fund
Education is one of the strongest pathways to opportunity.
The Kitega Education Fund supports community-driven and locally developed schools to provide accessible and quality education for children.
Rather than focusing on individual sponsorship, this approach strengthens the wider system by:
- Supporting school fees where needed
- Providing learning materials and uniforms
- Improving access for children from vulnerable households
- Strengthening local schools to better serve their communities
This helps ensure that support is:
- Inclusive
- Sustainable
- Rooted in the community
Health Awareness & Prevention
Many disabilities in our communities are preventable.
We work with families and partners to:
- Raise awareness around health and prevention
- Improve access to basic care
- Support families with essential health needs
Home Visits & Family Support
Much of the work happens beyond the centre.
Through home visits, we:
- Support families directly
- Follow up on children’s progress
- Encourage inclusion within the household
Because lasting change often begins at home.

Advocacy & Community Engagement
From the beginning, Kitega has worked to challenge stigma and create space for inclusion.
We:
- Engage schools and teachers on inclusive practices
- Facilitate community conversations
- Advocate for equal opportunity
Pathways to Independence
As children grow, some move toward skills and livelihood opportunities.
These pathways are supported through Imara, Kitega’s skills and livelihoods programme, which provides vocational training and income-generating opportunities.

What We Are Seeing
- Children growing in confidence and self-worth
- Families beginning to believe in their children
- Individuals becoming more independent
- Communities shifting in how they understand and include
- Persons with disabilities becoming active contributors
The Journey Ahead
We continue to:
- Reach more children and families
- Strengthen inclusive education pathways
- Support community understanding and acceptance
- Work toward a more inclusive society for all
