Our Story

And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love... (1 Corinthians 13:13)

Our Journey through the Years

Located in Kitega village, Kawolo Sub-county, Mukono District, approximately 40km from Kampala, Uganda’s capital, Kitega Community Centre serves the rural village of Kitega and its surrounding areas, including the nearby town of Lugazi. The local economy is predominantly agricultural, but a significant portion of the population faces unemployment and low living standards.

Our Story

Kitega Community Centre, a Christian organization, was founded by Rev. Canon Silas Musoke with support from the Kingserve Trust in Scotland. From 1999 to 2004, it operated under the National Association for the Mentally Handicapped and became an independent NGO in 2004. The Centre is interdenominational and welcomes all individuals without discrimination. Our mission is to foster a better world by creating a nurturing environment where everyone can thrive.

Our Focus

For many years, Kitega Community Centre has focused on supporting children with learning difficulties, often abandoned by their families who believed their disabilities were curses or linked to evil spirits. This neglect deprived these children of essential care, rights, and opportunities.

Our Impact

Kitega Community Centre has stepped in to demonstrate that with adequate educational, social, and emotional support, children with disabilities can acquire the skills needed to become self-reliant and valuable members of their families and communities. We are dedicated to ensuring that every child has the chance to learn, grow, and contribute to a better, more inclusive society.

Our Mission

To empower children with disadvantages and disabilities, to advocate for disability rights, and to foster community-owned development so that everyone can lead dignified, productive lives.

Our Vision

To achieve a healthy, sustainable community where every member is respected and valued; leads a dignified life, and contributes to the development of their community.

Our Faith Statement

Our work is guided by our faith in Jesus Christ’s love for all, the poor, sick and suffering. “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matt 25:40)

For many years, Kitega Community Centre has been dedicated to supporting children with learning difficulties, who are often abandoned by their families due to misconceptions that their disabilities are curses or linked to evil spirits. This neglect has deprived these children of the care, rights, and opportunities they deserve.

Our Impact

At Kitega Community Centre, we believe that individuals with disabilities are made in the image of God and deserve the opportunity to thrive. We provide a supportive environment where they can access special learning opportunities and develop a range of practical skills. Many of those we serve have been denied the chance for formal education, and our Centre offers them the resources and guidance they need to flourish.

We focus on skill development tailored to each individual’s strengths and interests, fostering personal growth and independence. Our programs promote social interaction and emotional well-being, empowering participants to build confidence and self-reliance.

Part of our community sensitization efforts includes cultivating various community-led development initiatives aimed at promoting understanding and acceptance of individuals with disabilities. By fostering awareness and encouraging local involvement, we strive to create a more inclusive environment where everyone is valued as a reflection of God’s image. Our commitment ensures that each individual has the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to a compassionate and inclusive society.
